These homemade breadsticks have become one of our favorite comfort foods. They’re soft, buttery, garlicky, and surprisingly simple to make. I love making these when we want something homemade without spending all day in the kitchen, and they pair perfectly with pasta night or soup.
Ingredients
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra if needed)
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
For the topping:
- 3 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder (or more if you love garlic)
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms, then knead until smooth. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour one tablespoon at a time.
- Cover with a tea towel and let rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled.
- Divide and shape into breadsticks, placing them on a lined or greased baking sheet.
- Bake at 400°F for 12–15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
- Mix melted butter, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning together. Brush generously over warm breadsticks.
Recipe Notes
- I sometimes add a splash of milk to the dough for softer breadsticks.
- Best served warm with pasta, soup, or marinara sauce.
- These disappear quickly in our house, so I usually wish I made extra.
